Biocybernetics of physiological processes

The research group of Biocybernetics of Physiological Processes applies interdisciplinary interconnection between modern methods of biosignal processing, mathematical modelling, control theory and their application in the field of biophysics and neuroscience. Complex physiological non-stationary data with a non-linear nature, for which traditional approaches to the data analysis remain inadequate in many ways, represent a carrier of fundamental, and often hidden information about the functioning of the organism.

The main emphasis is given to the processing of electrophysiological data, particularly processing of the electroencephalogram, electrocardiogram and electromyogram using multiple time-frequency resolution, wavelet analysis or methods of chaos theory and nonlinear dynamics, such as the fractal dimension, connectivity, entropy and many others.

Our research aim is to contribute to unravelling of the complex physiological regulations (e.g. brain activity, cardiovascular activity, respiration) under different (patho)physiological conditions, which still remain unresolved in many ways despite the intensive research in medicine and natural sciences. The ambition is also to apply obtained quantitative biomarkers and their automatic detection in development of software, as a non-invasive prognostic and diagnostic tool of neuropsychiatric diseases.

    Areas of Research

    • development of optimal methods for analysis of biosignals, taking into account their non-stationary and non-linear nature
    • research on the means of processing, integration and storage of information in the brain under different (patho)physiological conditions
    • development of diagnostic software in neurophysiology
    • characterisation of quantitative biomarkers as non-invasive prognostic and diagnostic tools of neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases
